NMD 200 Final

Upstage the Man
1. Pulling focus away from something serious and playing it down to the media.

2. I think the way that Brave New Maine advertised their website as far as graphics is a prime example of Upstaging the Man. They used fun colors and playful pictures while discussing a heavy topic.

3. http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/wilderness-resources/stories/what-can-28000-rubber-duckies-lost-at-sea-teach-us-about-

– I remembered watching a video of a group trying to pull focus into pollution of our seas with one certain campaign using rubber ducks. They took an innocent children’s toy and made a serious topic into a more friendly, attention grabbing one by using these cute toys.

Crowdsource the job

1. Using the public as a resource in a project.

2. Umaine Motivators used crowdsourcing when they asked the class to participate in a poll on which question they thought was fitting to the project. We then used that data and placed the top rated question on our board.

3.http://cutecircuit.com/collections/pink-black-collection/

– Cute Circuit partnered with Magnum Ice Cream and Twitter on an ice cream flavor contest where they designed a dress that would either turn pink or black depending on the votes from twitter. They used the public to decide which flavor to release, crowdsourcing for their success and getting the community excited to see the flavor and its corresponding dress color.

Aggregate, automate, and visualize data

1. Aggregating is collecting all of the data and facts, automating is verifying it, and visualizing data is putting it all together to present the findings.

2. In NMD 200, we had to compile all of our work onto our WordPress accounts. Putting all of this information together is an example of that.

3. I believe that Pinterest.com in another example of this, users create boards of different links and ideas. Here they can compile projects and ideas that all match a certain category where the user can divide up their content.

Mobilize People

1. Utilizing social media as a tool.

2. Using Facebook as our main connection to the Umaine campus in our final project, I think that Umaine Motivators were mobilizing people through an online connection.

3. Any social media site is an example of mobilizing people; twitter, facebook, etc. Connecting to the community is a key to success, so social media is a huge platform to start on.

DIY–Do It Yourself
1. A cost efficient way of gaining access to a tool by creating it yourself.

2. A way that used this in class was when Umaine Motivators made our own chalkboard paint! We used raw materials to create a paint that would have normally been at least double the cost.

3. Most New Media projects are DIY; writing code, making boards, designing prototypes and so on. We use the skills that we have to complete tasks, using DIY as a tool.

Distribute and connect information

1. Pulling together bits and pieces from multiple people’s solutions, pooling together their research

2. All group work in class is an example of distributing and connecting information. Every group member does research and has ideas, so when you pull them all together the concept is stronger.

3. I think that in class critiques of work is a great example! When a class looks at someone’s work, they pull in the own input and ideas in order to gain perspective and improve the piece.

Share what was inaccessible
1. Publicly sharing information through a network.

2. The glossary forum of our moodle is a space for us to share our personal research and to view what others have found on their own.

3. Many apps, such as Candy Crush use your facebook account to give you more features to the game. With this component, users connect their profiles and link their facebook friends to their Candy Crush game which is a way for the two companies to use each other.

Tap into local networks

1. Using the people around you as a resource.

2. We asked the other groups in NMD 200 to participate in the Umaine motivators project, using them as a tool to our success.

3. Yahoo Answers is a great way to tap into local networks. There you can ask any question you want answered and anyone who has an account can provide an answer for you.

How does your class project make use of the NMD strategies?

Describe all relevant strategies and how each is used by your project, and explain how it empowers your project to accomplish its goals in a way that may not be possible for a non-New Media approach.

With the Umaine Motivators project, the success really depended on the community and their involvement. We started out by crowdsourcing with the class and through our Facebook page, taking a poll of which question they would most likely answer if we put it out in the public on our board. From here, we had an overwhelming amount of vote on one particular question, which was the one we ended up using.

From there, we used the DIY idea to create both our board and the paint. The most cost-effective solution was to make the chalkboard paint from scratch as opposed to buying it for a much more expensive cost. We then built out board and the stands from chains and pieces of wood that we purchased from a hardware store, saving a lot of money!

We also based our project heavily on social media (mobilize people) to let the community know our purpose and where they could find our chalkboard. We collectively came together as a group, putting all of our ideas together which fits into the ‘distribute and connect information’ category. We all had a certain job that we were each responsible for. We opened up our project for discussion with the class, tapping into our local networks for success.
