London – BBC

BBC:

We had a very long, information packed day at BBC in London.  To start us off, we spoke with 3 BBC staff members who presented in front of the class about the BBC website and its importance.  We learned about the process of making the site and adjusting it so it translates flawlessly to different devices across many platforms.  They showed us a testing site that shows what a page will look like on every kind of device so that they can foresee errors before publishing a change.  They emphasized the point that the interface isn’t just designed for users, it is also carefully designed to support an easy interface for the journalists to use as well.  We learned about the design process used when developing such a large product.  It is important to lay out all of the ideas that you have and every aspect that you want the product to contain, then you go back and abolish what is not necessary and cut out the noise.  We were given a tour of the building by 2 amazing guides who were very informative about the history of BBC, we even got to participate in a broadcast! We took the tube over to their other office in London where we were split up and met leaders in different departments and got to see the programs that they were also developing! My group primarily learned about iSite and iPlayer which are both BBC products.
