Berlin – Kapoor Museum

Kapoor Museum in Berlin

I was a little skeptical when I first walked into this museum. When we walked in, you could see a little peak through the exhibit room and all I could see was a sea of red, I had no idea what to expect. Martin Gropius-Bau had the only exhibit in the museum at the time. Each room was filled with a different working by him, most of which incorporated wax. My favorite piece was called “Shooting into the corner.” This piece didn’t look like much when it wasn’t active, but at 5:30 a museum worker came out into the room and we all stood to watch with earplugs. He loaded up a giant gun and loaded it with a can of red wax. He locked up the gun and it made a loud noise, nothing being fired yet. We stood for about 5 minutes until it finally went off. The anticipation was killing everyone as we waiting for it to fire, but it was great when it did! The cylinder of wax stuck right into the corner adding to the previous fires and the floor was covered in melted wax. I like the collective aspect of his pieces. It adds up over time constantly changing the work. The piece with the conveyer belts was also another working that made people stand and wait for wax to drop. Wax blocks would be placed on one of the many conveyer belts and it would lift a large block of red wax to about 20 feet in the air and it would drop from the top into a pile large collecting in a dip in the floor. I think that any piece that draws a crowd and makes them wait is a successful one; the exhibit was definitely successful in that aspect. The pieces in the collection were so different, yet so cohesive and I think that is what makes him successful.
