Prague – CIANT

CIANT, which is the international center for art and new technology was the first place that we went to when we arrived in Prague. We were greeted by Don and Pavel who the cofounders of CIANT, founded in 1998.  Pavel lead us to their office that was in a secluded area of the building.  We had to walk over a metal bridge on top of the roof in order to get to it. We walked in to a project that he was working on for an electrical company, it was an interactive energy project.  It was a sheet that had a projector and a kinect behind it, projecting a flowing pattern.  When you pushed on the elastic sheet, the pattern would react to the pressure by lighting a different color. He used a program like MAX/MSP, called VVVV developed by Germans who were not satisfied with MAX. The electrical company plans to use this interactive piece to draw in customers at a convention.  Pavel and Don told us a lot of history throughout our day with them.  We learned about the history of CIANT and the history of computers and technology, but we also learned about what to expect in the future.  Pavel warned us about the issue of money in this field, it will always be a game changer.  Finally, he left us with a quote that I thought was very important for people in this field to remember,  ”You cant change biology.” I think that this is very important to hear because innovative designers are constantly pushing boundaries, but it is not successful when you push too far.  We now live in a world where we have the tools to experiment and research whatever we want, but you cannot go against human perception.
