Berlin – Rotraut Pape

Today we arrived in Berlin a little late to our meeting with Rotraut Pape, a video artist from here in Germany. Rotraut is a professor in Frankfurt at HFG where she is the primary video guru.  She only has 8 students in her class who get special attention and believe me, it shows. She started off by explaining to us what film night was, which is an event the school holds in the summer that exhibits all of the students . She showed us some of the short films that were played at film night that were made by students in the masters program.  I have never been so amazed by a film as I was after I saw these. The students had such amazing talent, I was honestly speechless. Their after effects skills were beyond professional.  Another project that is up and coming that she told us about is a 3D dome video.  You stand inside the dome and the video is circular and engulfs the entire dome.  There was an example of another dome product that you look at instead of go inside and it was of the globe changing into intricate graphics. I feel like these dome videos are going to become a big thing, especially in the music world.  She gave us some more helpful hints to make our own productions better. She emphasized how important sound is in film, without the right music and sound your film can’t reach it’s potential.  She told us how her students make their sound effects, utilizing everything that they can; body fluids, potatoes, and random objects like that.
